Mopar Throttle Body

The throttle body is a critical component of a vehicle’s air intake system. This tube-shaped auto part contains a throttle plate known as a butterfly valve which regulates airflow into an engine’s intake manifold. This valve rotates on a shaft and controls the amount of air entering your engine's combustion chamber. Get an authentic throttle body for your vehicle at MoparOnlineParts today.

Maintain Your Vehicle’s Air Intake System with an OEM Throttle Body

Located between an engine’s intake manifold and air filter, the throttle body is an assembly that houses your vehicle’s throttle system. This system controls air flow which is a key component of spark ignition. Outside air enters your engine through the intake manifold at the front of your car and travels through the air filter. It then flows through a tube to the throttle system, introducing a perfect balance of air and fuel to your vehicle’s engine.

The amount of air that flows into your engine is the result of how far you press the accelerator pedal to the floor. Pushing down your gas pedal will open the throttle plate and allow air to enter your engine. In turn, releasing it will close the butterfly valve and limit throttle air flow into your engine’s combustion chamber. This process controls both the speed of your engine and ride.

There are several reasons why a throttle body may fail to work properly. Dirt buildup on the surface of a throttle body can clog the butterfly valve, causing rough idling, hard starts or stalls, vacuum leaks, and sluggish acceleration. This is why your throttle body requires periodic cleaning and maintenance. In some cases, the entire component can give out and will need to be replaced.

Helpful Information for Throttle Body

How much hp (horsepower) does a throttle body add?

Throttle bodies can give your ride from 5 to 25 additional horsepower. Take note that these values will depend on other modifications that you do to the engine. Also consider other factors like engine displacement, weight, and the like when reaching for a specific horsepower gain.

Can a bad throttle body cause misfires?

Your engine can misfire if it runs with a faulty throttle body assembly. Having a defective throttle body can mess up the air-fuel mixture in the engine and cause misfires. Additionally, small bumps from revving your engine are another indication for misfires.

How do I clean my vehicle’s throttle body?

Turn your car off and remove the negative terminal of your battery. Find the hoses connected to the throttle body assembly or air ducts and remove them. Spray these components to remove dirt, gum, and varnish from the throttle body with a brush.

Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned the throttle body, apply a drop of oil to the throttle shafts. Clean your engine or surrounding parts with paper towels as well. After that, reinstall and secure the throttle body ducts and reattach the battery. Then, start your engine and let it idle for one or two minutes.

When should I clean the throttle body?

Most automakers recommend cleaning the throttle body assembly every 100,000 miles. But you can also clean it every 30,000 miles or more frequently, depending on how you’re using your car.

How do I test my car’s throttle body?

Start your vehicle and let it warm up either by leaving it idle or driving it around. Leave your car idle after driving and listen for any irregular sounds coming from your engine.

Next, open the OBD connection panel below your steering wheel. Plug your OBD-II scanner into the panel and start your vehicle. Let the scanner collect data, then see if your throttle body sensor is causing issues. Turn off your vehicle afterward and interpret the codes you’ve received.
