Maximize Your Engine’s Performance with a Genuine Spark Plug
A spark plug’s role in your ignition system is to produce a small electric arc that ignites the compressed air/fuel mixture. If this spark isn’t functioning correctly, your car will suffer from inefficient fuel usage, improper engine operation, and potential internal damage.
Once you notice that your vehicle is accelerating too slowly, it’s a sign that your spark plugs need a replacement. Other indications include engine misfires, inefficient fuel consumption, and poor start-up responses. You can also perform a manual inspection yourself. For instance, a dirty spark plug means that there’s an oil leak or carbon deposit. If it looks worn out, it could be a sign that your engine is misfiring or that it's being exposed to too much heat.
Replace your spark plugs at least once every 20,000 to 50,000 miles. However, if you’re driving a high-performance car, you’d want to change it more frequently. The most common ones are made of copper, which are cheap but wear out quickly. Platinum ones are more expensive but can last up to 100,000 miles. Iridium types are also available which are 25% more durable than platinum plugs.

Helpful Information for Spark Plugs
How many spark plugs does a car have?
Most engines have one spark plug per cylinder. For example, an inline-four engine will have four spark plugs. Other special engines have more than one spark plug per cylinder. Performance engines like the HEMI utilize two spark plugs per engine cylinder for maximum power and performance.
Where are spark plugs located?
If your engine has four cylinders, you’ll find spark plugs over it or on one of its sides. You can also see these engine parts over or on the side of a six-cylinder engine. These components can be seen on either side of a V6 or V8 engine due to the orientation of the car cylinders.
How hot do spark plugs get?
Engine spark plugs can reach around 500 to 950°C. But in some cases, they can go over 950°C. Take note that if your spark plug becomes too hot, it can overheat and fail to deliver the appropriate spark during ignition.
How do I check my vehicle’s spark plugs for defects?
First, remove the wire on your spark plugs. Gently pull its end fitting so the wire comes off. Next, attach a spark plug tester to the ignition wire. Start your ignition and engine after that. If you don’t see any spark or glow, it will fail to ignite the air-fuel mixture in your cylinders. Also check the tips of the spark plugs to see if there’s enough material for consistent ignition.
What kind of spark plugs do I need?
Spark plug manufacturers usually offer copper, platinum, and iridium plugs. Copper transfers more heat, while platinum and iridium last longer. You can refer to your owner’s manual for the ideal spark plug for your vehicle. If you want to make your ride more performance-oriented, you can opt for platinum or iridium spark plugs instead.
