Mopar Mass Airflow Sensor

A mass airflow sensor is found in your car’s electronic fuel injection system that plays a key role in balancing the right amount of fuel mass in the engine. The sensor determines the mass flow rate of the air that is being delivered to the engine. MoparOnlineParts carries OEM mass airflow sensors for various Mopar vehicles.

Keep Your Engine in Top Shape with a Premium Mass Airflow Meter

A mass airflow sensor (MAS) is a critical part of your engine’s fuel injection system. It measures airflow or how much air is entering the engine. This determines the amount of fuel that is injected for combustion. If the ratio of air and fuel aren’t correct, problems in engine performance can arise.

As such, it’s best to know the common indicators of a failing mass airflow sensor. For instance, poor fuel economy and a “check engine light” that turns on are signs that you need to replace your sensor. Scan tools can also be used to check the accuracy of your mass airflow sensor. A bad airflow sensor will typically have low airflow readings.

If you have a faulty mass airflow meter, make it a point to change it immediately to avoid engine problems. For good measure, check your engine’s air filter as well. If it is damaged or clogged, you might want to get a replacement part too.

Helpful Information for Mass Airflow Sensor

Where is my mass airflow sensor located?

Most car MAF sensors can be found near the air box. Other vehicles may have these sensors near the intake plenum, but will always be installed before the throttle body. The location of the MAF sensors ensure that they can accurately measure the amount of air entering your engine.

How does a mass airflow sensor work?

Your MAF sensor has two sensing wires. One wire is heated with an electrical current, which will then be cooled once air flows through it. The changing temperatures of the wires will determine whether or not the MAF sensor will increase or decrease the electrical current being sent to the heated wire. Then, the sensor will convert that current into a frequency or voltage signal and send it to the ECU.

What happens if I disconnect my mass airflow sensor?

Your car should still start and run normally even if you disconnect its mass airflow sensor. Your ECU will instead estimate the amount of air going into the engine. This means that even if you have an unplugged or faulty MAF sensor, your engine will still be able to function optimally.

What happens when my car’s mass airflow sensor is bad?

A faulty MAF sensor can show these warning signs:

  • Your vehicle fails to start.

  • Your car stalls while you drive.

  • Your vehicle loses power.

  • You experience weak acceleration.

  • Your Check Engine light is on.

How long does it take to replace a MAF sensor?

You can change your mass airflow sensor in less than an hour. Sensor replacements often involve disconnecting and unscrewing the electrical connector on the mass air flow sensor and the negative battery terminal. Once you’ve replaced your MAF sensor, make sure to torque the necessary bolts according to manufacturer specs and return all the unmounted components back to their original positions.
